Bauer Media Group

Bauer Verlagsgruppe, or as it is more commonly known, The Bauer Media Group has been managed by four generations of the Bauer family. Originally a small printing house, The Bauer Publishing Group has grown into a worldwide publishing and media company. The Bauer Publishing Group has over two hundred magazines worldwide in fifteen different countries. Bauer started in the UK with the launch of Bella magazine in 1987 leading to them becoming Britain's third largest publisher. Bauer further expanded in the UK with the purchase of Emap Consumer Media and Emap Radio in 2008 making them the UK's biggest publishing group today.

H Bauer brands include TV listings magazines, such as Bella, Take a Break, that's life! TVChoice and Total TVGuide, as well as two very well known music magazines, ‘Q’ and ‘Kerrang’.

Bauer Media Group also owns 50% of ‘Box Television’ (the other half is owned by ‘Channel 4’). ‘Box Television’ produces several popular music television channels; ‘Q TV’, ‘Kerrang! TV’, ‘4 Music’, ‘The Box’ ect.

I think this company would publish my magazine because ‘Kerrang!’ focuses on rock music and music videos, and ‘Q’ magazine, especially ‘Q TV’ and ‘Q Radio’ specialises in rock, indie and alternative, therefore my magazine, being one that focuses on indie rock, would fit with the courent genre they publish. Also both magazines mainly have an older age group of readers so I think they would benefit from targeting a magazine at a younger age group to broaden the ages that read their magazines.

Double Page Spread Article - Amber

My first photo shoot with Maxwell Southern can only be described with one word. Hilarious. I started that day having a clear image of what when where and how I wanted my photos taking, the plan was to have Max leaned up against a graffiti wall playing his guitar looking off into the distance dramatically with the best ‘indie’ face he could do. What I did not expect was for him to spontaneously decide to walk into the nearby town centre, guitar in hand, sit down on a bench and start busking, “I would sing as well as playing guitar, but I don’t wanna put people off” as well as drawing a small crowd, I managed to capture the best indie style photographs I could have possibly got. The second photo shoot was a little more productive in the way that I was a little more in control, but once again by the end of the shoot Max had ended up taking charge by energetically throwing himself into different poses commanding me to take pictures because “the light is just perfect here” and “how great would this be for a background”.

On paper Maxwell looks a pretty average teenager, a year 12 student studying History, English literature, German and Photography at AS level (the photography explains why he thinks he is such a know it all when it comes to photo shoots), good grades at GCSE and pretty much an overall hard worker. In person, everything about him screams ‘indie’, the first photo shoot he comes dressed in skinny jeans, grey plimsolls, a dark grey leather jacket and a blue beanie hat. The second time we meet, the skinnys, plimsolls and beanie hat are on again, along with a navy blue blazer and a blue shirt to match. This guy couldn’t be more indie if he tried, and he is one of the very few people I have met who can actually pull this look off. His band ‘All the Pretty Faces’ has not exactly hit the ‘big time’, yet. “We hold band practice once or twice a week, we aren’t even on YouTube, we just mess around writing songs and learning to play well known ones for a bit of fun,” Says Alan Richardson, fellow band member, “I’m better at guitar than Max, and he’s better at the drums than me, but I always end up playing the drums and him the guitar.” This laid back approach to achieving stardom may work, but it is unlikely. It’s a good job these guys are not looking to be discovered and make their millions, “as nice as that sounds” they are just looking to have a good time. “We are quite happy rehearsing in Max’s mum’s garage; just us, the instruments, and a six pack of Budweiser. Its great fun, have you ever tried to play the drums drunk? It’s bloody hard!” I can honestly answer no to that one Alan. As I try and take a picture of Alan and Max, Alan launches himself under the table, shielding himself from the cameras view. “There are two reasons why I like being the drummer, one, it’s a hell of a workout, and two, nobody ever takes pictures of the drummer.” Alan describes himself as ‘camera shy’, saying he would much rather Max be the main man and he hide behind him, “with a drum kit as extra protection from the camera lens”

As this is an indie magazine, during an interview we always ask the most basic question, ‘what is your favourite indie band?’ “Oasis.” Both Alan and Max answer in unison without even a second to take a moment and think about the question. “One Night Only is probably my second favourite,” says Alan, “George Craig looks just gorgeous in the video for ‘Say You Don’t Want It’” as much as I would like to agree with him, I stay out of the argument between Max and Alan over who is ‘more fit’ lead singer George Craig or his ex girlfriend and Harry Potter star Emma Watson, who made a guest appearance in One Night Only’s music video for the single ‘Say You Don’t Want It’ which was released in August 2010.

Another generic question I have to ask is, ‘what is your favourite indie song?’ Max, no surprise, chooses an Oasis song, “it has gotta be ‘Wonderwall’ it is the best song they ever wrote.” Wonderwall was the third song to be released from the bands second album, ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory’ in October 1995. Although it only ever reached number two in the UK charts, it was a huge hit in the US, staying at number 1 on the ‘Modern Rock Charts’ for ten weeks. Alan, unlike Max, finds this question a little harder to answer, “There is just so many awesome songs out there to choose from!” its clear on his face that all this thinking is giving him a headache, so just this once I let him off the hook, by making him list his top five favourites instead. “Is that supposed to be an easier question?” says Alan while he is giving me a look that could kill, “well, Oasis would be in my top five, but not Wonderwall.” To save himself from getting slapped across the face by Max, he quickly continues, “My favourite is ‘She’s Electric’. For the rest I would probably have to choose ‘Mardy Bum’ by Arctic Monkeys, ‘I Am the Resurrection’ by The Stone Roses, ‘Same Jeans’ by The View and ‘Step On My Old Size Nines’ by Stereophonics.” I realise he is looking at something under the table, and when I ask him what he pulls out his ipod and owns up he was reading the top five most listened to songs… cheater.

In last month’s magazine, we advertised a competition where the winner would get their question asked to the subject (or subjects) of this month’s main article. The winners question is, “if you ever make an album what would it be called and why?” Max and Alan exchange ‘deep in thought looks’ as this is clearly something they have not thought about, “I gotta be honest, I have no idea” says Max speechless for the first time since the start of the interview, “I think it would have to be named after our favourite song on the album or something like that.” Alan however has a more clear answer, “effort. The reason we aren’t on YouTube and why we don’t try and get gigs and why we don’t take rehearsals seriously is because all that stuff requires effort, and honestly, we are lazy. If we ever get the opportunity to be famous, have all our songs in the charts, and go on world tours it will be because of luck and because someone thinks we are good. Not because we tried.”

Look out for ‘All The Pretty Faces’ on YouTube (yes, I convinced them to put their music online). Bands like these need to be discovered because they have talent. Many localised bands that ‘are just in it for fun’ deserve to have their songs played to the world, instead of the fame hungry, talentless artists you hear everyday.

    Kyran Double Page Spread Analysis

Content analysis of a double page spread
    • The largest image is of the band the article is about this is so it draws your attention to the image straight away
    • The bold font at the beginning of the main story links to the largest image on the DPS as it mentions ‘Weird’ which links to the strange shades the people artist has got on
    • The bold font also draws your attention to the beginning of the story
    • The pull quote at the beginning has a bolder, larger font for each band, so it draws you attention to it, as it shows the weirdness of the band in the case of ‘Baddies’, it could also be a house style so it shows consistency as people may not like it to change
    • The fact box at the bottom of each profile for the band is most likely a house style part to the magazine, so some people will buy it for these facts
    • Also the fact they in the dark in the image could link to there name as ‘Baddies’ you would relate to the dark
    • Also the image for ‘The Soft Pack’ is also linked to the band name as the image by removing the colour a little makes it seem softer, also they are all smiling so it makes them seem happier
    • The image for ‘Chairlift’ is a close-up as it shows that this band is mainly focused on him
    • The way the text is set up is to make it easy to read and also makes it seem more spread out, also it allows you to focus on the pull quote on the centre

    kyran double page spread analysis

    Double Page Spread

The double page spread by Metal Hammer in December 2010 about the architects, used lots of informal language as this suits the target audience as it is not difficult to read and easy to understand, this is what I would use for my magazine as my target audience is 17-19 year olds and when they purchase the music magazines they expect an easy read.
Also there is a range of different sentence styles used in this article, this makes the article flow more and simple to read. Further more it makes it more understandable so in my magazine I am going to use a range of sentence styles to create this effect in my magazine.
The use of superlatives and imperatives helps top advertise the band as the superlatives make the band sound very good and the imperatives make you want to buy there new album or single. I would therefore use this to advertise the band I am using for my double page spread.
Colloquialism are used through out the article especially in the quotes therefore this makes the quotes sound more real as the use of language is what is expected of young people. This then made me realise for quotes I will have to use language that would be expected of the type of band they are e.g. young, would use a lot more colloquialisms.
There is a use of rhetorical questions throughout the magazine this therefore makes the audience question themselves and gets them thinking. I may use them in my article as I would hopefully get the same effect from that on my magazine.
There is a lot of use of active language throughout the magazine, I may use this in my magazine as it creates the feeling of looking forward to the future for this band and the audience will therefore want to be a part of it.

    contents page analysis 2- kyran

    • The masthead for the magazine is also on the contents page, this shows continuation and the mast head is iconic and recognisable
    • Has the features down the left hand side to show you what the magazine contains and what you should expect, furthermore they use common headings for the features so you know what to expect even if the artists are different.
    • below the features column they have a 'Oasis Special' this is shown as they are the biggest artist involved in the issue. also they have more than one article about them.
    • The main image is central and it also is the biggest in the contents so you know that is the main article and one of the bigger bands in the article. the dennotates of this image is a mountain, but it connotates that they are high up in the world
    • there is also a smaller image of a guy in the bottom in the middle who looks relax and this could connotate he is happy with life
    • the font remains the same, and for the main headings they used block capitals, to show they are the main features, used black, red and white font colour throughout the article as this is the house style. the font type is also a house style as it remains constant through each issue
    • There is also in the bottom left corner a section where they have articles they do every month, this again is more of a house style, and it shows continuation so if you like these articles you keep going back to it
    • the font colour for the 'Oasis Special' is gold as it connotates that it is important and the main article, and its like gold its precious and something to be appreciated

    Contents page analysis 1- kyran

    • Kasabian is the main article as shown by the main image, you know it is the main image as it relates to the main story. Further more it is the largest image on the magazine and it is central in the contents so you are drawn to it
    • Contains what edition it is so it shows that it is weekly edition for new buyers, so if they really like they can buy it each week
    • the contents shows a side bar, that contains headings to lead you to the articles you will most likely want to read about, for example if you only purchased the magazine for the main article
    • down the left hand side there is a band list of previous artists that have been on the magazine, and if they have a number next to them they are in the magazine and the number is what page they mentioned on. this helpful for people wanting to keep up to date on there favourite artists
    • there is mini story in the contents page to show what the main story is going to be about, and it gives an overview of the type of stories that are going to be mentioned and why they been included in the edition, in this case because of there new album.
    • Font size and style are the same throughout, it is constant so it keeps the same style, further more the sub heading and the heading 'THIS WEEK' are the same font as the mast head but different colour, the colour for the sub headings and heading would be black as it more formal.
    • the font for the the details on the articles and the band list and the main story are the same, they remain constant as the font is the house style for magazine

Kyran and Amber intitial music magazine ideas

We had 4-5 ideas on names Breakeven! I.R.M, Notion, Genesis or Indie-Go, eventually with some advice from friends around us we decided on Indie-go as it gives a clear image on what the audience can expect when reading the magazine as it mentions the type of music the mag on in the title. We then started discussing what colour scheme we wanted to use for the house style on the front cover and contents of both editions of our magazine, with the title being a way of saying a colour purple we decided that had to be one but we had to choose an accompanying colour we had to decide between red and blue, we used our survey to see which the audience would prefer we also put in other combinations just in case. We decided that our target audience would be 15-17 year olds, male or female so we had to make the magazine up to date with modern indie music artists. Also we had the idea of having a monthly magazine but we asked in out survey just in case the audience would prefer more or less frequent. We also started to think of designs for titles (which you can see on the survey) from these we let the audience decide there preferences. Further more we came up with some ideas on what we wanted our main article to be about we came up with ideas like best of 2011, useful equipment, interviews also displayed on our survey where the audience decide the type of story they want to see.

What have I learnt so far?

As I took media at GCSE level I had already learnt most of the skills being used on this preliminary task such as the rule of thirds, horizon, lighting and keeping the frame tight. The adobe software is new to me as I have not had to use it before so editing the photos is all new to me and inserting words and images are also new to me. Also I have leant how to upload photos onto the web as well as my annotated work and descriptions. The apple Macs I have also worked with before but some of the software on there is new like adobe also using the finder on the Mac to organise work I have learnt to do properly.
