selection and rejection-kyran
Selection and rejection process
Selection
I chose the front cover image of the girl playing guitar as I though hr eyes looked really good and fierce and gave across the type of image that a Indie artist would have. It shows as she is a solo artist her strength alone on the front cover. Also the fact she looking straight at the camera makes it look like she is looking directly at you so therefore at the audience to make her appal to them as this attractive young Indie star. Furthermore it is a medium close up so it focuses on the shoulder upwards and also shows her guitar to show she is multi talented.
The next image on the front cover of the twins I chose this to shot as it was close up and focused on the boys similarity as they are twins and it is very rare to find band with twins in. Also the boys are both looking rather serious again which links to the Indie image they try to put across. Plus if they where single images it would look like a criminal snap shot therefore linking to the title of the article Twin Trouble and also could connotate they are rebellious. Also in the image they are both looking away in the image this could connotate they are not bothered by the fame and they are trying two normal teenage boys.
The image in the top right of the mid shot of the young girl I chose because again she is looking directly at the camera to show of her looks which would appeal to the young male audience. Also it is a single image of a female artist so could show how she is trying to be independent and doesn't need anyone help to become famous. This then shows to the audience that no matter who you are you can make it.
The image in the middle on the right side of the girl leaning on a tree I chose because it shows her in a different environment and could connotate that this girl is adventurous and has visited many places. Also it could show she likes living her life on the wild side and the music produces could be something along those lines. Also the Mid shot puts her in the centre to show she is the star and the one that the attention is on.
The final image on the contents page is again of the twin boys this time they are both looking up as though looking at the stars or sky as there fame has allowed them to reach for the sky/stars. Again it is a two shot to show that there attraction is that they are famous, talented twins and that it was attracts the audience. They are also close together as this shows they have a strong relationship with each other and this could be a reason behind there success.
The central image on the double page spread I chose because it shows them fighting and this relates to the title of twin trouble. As fighting is troublesome and could connotate to the audience that although they are famous they still have chance to behave like normal twins and play fight sometimes. Also it shows that they have a good relationship even when they are under pressure from being famous. Again it is a two shot to show again that they are twins and they have the relationship that any normal twins would have.
The two shot of the boys in the bottom left corner of the DPS shows them listening to music, this could then connotate to show us that although they are famous they still have time to do normal teenage things like listening to music. Also this would then make it appeal to the audience as they would see the boys listening to music and then think if they do it so should I. Also again it shows there closeness as they are doing it together as twins would to show they have a normal twin relationship.
The final image is of a Mid long shot of both the boys again to show again there closeness and again that they are famous due to the fact they are twins and in a band. Also they are doing the iconic shot of both looking down away from the camera to either corner which could connotate they are modest about their fame and they dont really realise how famous they ar. Which links into one of the questions in the article where they say about how their parents try shy them away from how famous they are and they do try to be Normal teenagers best they can.
(These images just look at the front cover, content and DPS)
Rejection
The reason I did not chose this image for the main image of the front cover is because she is looking down away from the camera. Also her face is to dark really for the type of image I was trying to get across. Furthermore she has quirky smile on her face that doesn't really suit for the type of artist I wanted her to be. Plus she looks to slouched and that would give of the image she is lazy and know artist really would want to be known as lazy.
The reason I did not chose this image of the boys for the front cover is that the twin on the right has a dodgy smile on his face which doesn't really suit with image we trying to portray of them. Also there is to much distance between them which again doesn't suit the image as we want them to appear as close brothers as that is why they would make a band together. Furthermore the image is slightly blurry so the focus is not right for a front cover image and also the lighting behind the boys is to dark so shadowing the back of the boys heads.
I didn't choose this image because her face is not looking at the camera so therefore not addressing the audience which is not what we wanted from the image. Furthermore because she is looking down her face becomes in shadow and therefore you cannot really see her. Plus she has her eyes close which gives of the image that she is trying to blank out the audience which is not really an attractive thing for a famous person to do.
I didn't chose this image for the contents page as she is has a bizzarre look on her face so therefore not very appealing to the men reading the article or purchasing the magazine. Also because of the shadow from the trees her face becomes in shadow so not very clear and also she is not really focused or looking towards the camera therefore not drawing the audience into looking at her.
I didn't chose this image for my contents page because the two shot of the boys has one of them with a strange look on his face so obviously could not be chosen as it would give of a weird vibe to the audience. Also the right twin has one eye closed and this if used would have connotated trying to block out his brother and as they are in band would not be a good image to give of. Also the idea of shot was for them tp be looking up away from the camera and the left twin was so another reason not to choose this image.
I have not chosen this image for my double page spread because first of all the image is blurry so could not be used as could hurt the eyes of the audience trying to focus on it. Also the image doesn't appear right because the boys seem to be of the rule of thirds so mes seem of centre. Also the look on the left twins face makes him look slightly drunk which would definitely not give of the right image.
This image of the boys fighting again appears to be slightly blurry so not suitable for the DPS. Also the face of the boy getting punched is to contorted and doesn't really look appealing to the audience or funny which is what we wanted. Also in the image I wanted them both to be trying to throw a punch therefore linking to the title of twin trouble, this image would make it twin bullying. Furthermore the left twin throwing the punch seems to be laughing which is not good as it shows he is enjoying the idea of punching his brother in the face which isn't really a good image for a band.
This image was not chosen for the DPS because the twin on the left is looking away from the camera and not at his phone which is what I wanted him to be doing as it would show him in a relaxed environment. Also the twin on the right has his eye closed this therefore makes it look like he is completely ignoring the audience which is not a good image to give of. Also the twin on the right seems to be of the rule of thirds therefore making our attention not be grabbed by him.

selection and rejection of my photographs - amber
This photograph is a possible choice for my double page spread. I would have liked to have used this for my front cover image but the model is not looking at the camera therefore it is no good. I think the background really suits the ‘indie’ theme of the magazine and the bag on the floor fits with the colour scheme well.
Originally this was going to be the image I used for the front cover, but I have decided to use this image on the contents page instead. This image will have a splash on it indicating what page the double page spread is on and it will go next to the ‘Features’ column. The colours he is wearing are perfect because the colour scheme me and my partner decided on using our questionnaire results is blue and purple, because the model is wearing different shades of blue I will edit the background on adobe photo shop so it is purple.
Although I like this picture, because of the lighting, the subject has a bright outline compared to the rest of his face and body which is dark due to shade. The photo isn’t central with too much space above the subject’s head for a shot that was to be on the contents page or the DPS. Also, in the bottom left hand corner the subject’s foot has been cut off the shot.
This image does not have any flaws in the way that it has no blurred areas, it isn’t out of focus and the lighting is perfect, however the photograph isn’t central. There is too much space above the head, too much background and the bag in the bottom right hand corner has been partially cut from the photograph. Therefore I will not be using this image in my final magazine.

This image is almost identical to the one I have chosen for my contents page, the lighting is slightly darker on this image than the other due to the sun going behind the clouds, therefore I choose the better lit one of the two.

questionairre analysis
We created a questionnaire to find out about preferred colour scheme, best masthead design and other features of a magazine.
The colour scheme that got the most votes was blue and purple which was the one we hoped would be chosen because it best fits with the title of the magazine “Indie <> Go”. Although the other colour scheme options got roughly the same amount of votes (two and three votes per colour scheme) blue and purple was the clear option with the most votes.
For the masthead options we designed three different styles and uploaded them onto the questionnaire so people could choose which option they thought was the most effective. Option 2 was the most popular therefore it is the one we will use for our magazine.
The next few questions we mainly asked for research purposes as we wanted to know whether our target audience preferred issues to be brought out weekly, monthly or seasonly, we also asked where they purchase their favourite magazines from and how do they find out about other magazines. We found out that the preferred option out of weekly, monthly and seasonly is monthly, and people mostly purchase magazines from supermarkets and corner shops over buying them online or at post offices. This information helps us because we now know how often an issue should be brought out and where they should be sold.
One of the main things we were struggling to decide on was what edition of the magazine we should bring out, spring, summer, autumn or winter. From the survey results we found out that people would prefer to read a christmas edition the most, followed by a summer addition being the next popular. Therefore we now know the two editions we need to produce that would be the most popular if sold.
To decide what we should include in our magazine we asked on our questionnaire what features the reader would like to see, 'interview', 'best instruments', 'best looking', 'latest and greatest' and 'best off 2011'. On this question you could choose more than one option, we chose to do this because it gives us the chance to include all of the options in our magazines but we know what will be the most read articles. The most chosen options were 'best of 2011' (thirteen votes), secondly 'latest and greatest' and 'interview' (both with nine votes), next was 'best instruments' (six votes) and finally 'best looking artist' with only three votes. For the double page spreads, one will be an article on the best songs and artists of 2011 and the other will either be an interview or an article on the latest and greatest bands and or solo artists.
To help with our similar product research we asked 'what is your favourite music magazine?' and we gave the options of 'Q', 'Kerrang', 'UnCut' and 'N.M.E' as these are the most popular and well known music magazines available. We also gave the option 'Other please specify' so that if any other magazine is preferred the reader could state what it is. From this question we discovered that 'Q' is the most favourite music magazine.
We wanted to know who we should put on the front cover of our magazines that would be most appealing to the reader and make them want to buy the magazine. The most popular option out of a solo artist, a duet or a band was a band with ten votes, however a solo artist was second popular with nine vote, therefore on our magazines we will either choose a solo artist or a band for the front cover, which will also be related to the double page spread article.
Finally we needed to know whether or not to have more pictures or more text on the double page spread article, we asked the reader if they prefer to read text, look at pictures or half and half. All votes went to half and half, therefore we now know to include an equal amount of text and pictures.

kyrans double page spread article
This month Indie-Go reporters managed to catch up with up and coming band Shared Light. Shared Light is a band whose lead singers are both twins, James and Oliver Norton who we caught up with in their home in Hull fresh after their release of new single ‘Just Smile When It Rains’ and their Debut Album ‘Same Face, Different Personality’. The boys barely 17, were both very willing to pose for the camera and answer our questions for you, their many fans.
Q, Who inspired you?
James: As we were younger we loved to listen to bands from Indie Background such as Oasis and Arctic Monkeys, I suppose that’s where our love for Indie music came from and that’s what inspires our music.
Oliver: Yeah I have to agree with my brother there, there are so many great indie bands out there. We love them all, they all inspire us. Not only that, but our family and friends inspire us, not to mention our amazing fans!
Q, What do you think to your recent success?
J: I suppose it hasn’t really settled in yet, but yeah it’s amazing to know that we have so much love from our fans, our latest single getting to the UK top 10 was amazing considering our age.
O: Being 17 you’re sort of shaded away from how successful you are, by people like you’re parents as we do still live at home. I may know how to shred a guitar but working an iron I have no clue, but yes our success is amazing. Also, yes I am excited for the release of our new album.
Q, What’s it like being in a band with your twin?
J: Well it has its perks I suppose (he winks at me obviously hinting sarcasm) the main one being I’ve grown up with him so I know him better than most so arguments are rare, but he can annoy me especially when people get us confused.
O: Eurgh it’s a pain in the ass to be honest, definitely the people getting confused about who we are but at school it had its perks as we could blame each other if we got into trouble, not like we ever did get into trouble of course…
Q, What do you like to do outside of the music business?
J: Well it depends; we do loads of stuff when we have spare time. Like spending time with our family, football, playing game consoles just general normal teenager stuff.
O: Honestly, I am the laziest person around, so when you see me outside of the music business I’m either, partying with friends, sleeping, Watching TV or playing on the game consoles, which are very important to me. But to be honest we’re very busy with music most of the time as that’s what we love to do.
Q, What is it like being so young but so successful?
J: It’s kind of weird to be honest. All the friends you make during your years at school, you very rarely get to see them, and they are all too busy doing their A-levels. Which we spend our time thinking about doing, but there just isn’t enough time in the day to do it.
O: I hate not seeing my friends but they are all proud of us so we keep going on knowing they understand. As long as we remember our routes we will be fine, also being young your parents still have a big influence on our life and as I said before, our mother still does everything for us. We owe so much to her, and we are so happy to make her proud.
Q, What would you say to your fans if you could?
J: To our fans we say thank you for all the support we have gotten over the past few months. We love you all and as long as our music keeps appealing to you and we have your support, we will be happy.
O: You are amazing; we owe so much to you. We hope you will keep supporting us in what we hope will be a long career for us, hopefully with some success. And remember our light will always be shared with the ones who support us.
Q, James is it true you have a lucky pair of boxers you wear when performing?
J: Ha ha can’t believe you just asked me that, but yes I do have a lucky pair of boxers I wear for performing. As I am very superstitious, I wear the boxers I wore when we got noticed by the scouts, who nurtured us on our way to our success. I wear them every time we perform.
Q, Oliver is it true you recently put your brother in A and E when you tried pranking him, involving a bucket of water falling on his head and giving him concussion?
O: yes that is true my brother and me have a very good relationship, but yes we are still 17 years old twin brothers. We play the occasional pranks on each other, there was this one time a couple of months ago, I tried pranking James with a bucket on top of the door, and yes I misplaced the bucket, which then smacked him on the head. You should have seen the fear in my mother’s eyes, when she found out he had concussion.
Q, Our competition winner wanted to ask you one question and that is if you could get with any female person in the world who would it be?
J:Hmm… difficult question, as there are so many gorgeous women out there. But if I have to answer then it would be the lead singer from Paramore, Hayley Williams. Not only is she stunningly beautiful, but she a great lead singer! Or I would have to say Gemma Arterton, she is also pretty actress. I met her the other day and I must say she’s fitter in person.
O: At the premiere we attended for the silly chick – flick called “A Week With Marilyn” we met some stunning women especially the young Emma Watson. As I’ve watched her grow up in the harry potter saga, i’ve always had a thing for her as she is so stunningly beautiful. Although I love Indie music and always will, I have also slightly fancied the beautiful country singer Taylor Swift.
