Research into Language and Register
For my research into language and register in music magazines I looked at double page spread articles from RockSound and ClashMusic. From these articles I discovered that music magazines tend to use-
- They use lots of colloquialisms that the target audience the magazines are aiming for use in everyday life, this creates the feeling of inclusion and understanding in the audience
- I also found they used a lot of interviews when Interviewing took place so they were direct quotes from the band members so the audience get the feel they are directly speaking to the band and get to know them better
- The magazines also tend to use pull quotes that are often shocking or used to put across a inspirational message to the audience, therefore putting across a good image of the band trying to give inspiration to there fans
- In ClashMusic they used a alliteration in the opening sentence 'weird wired world' this grabs the attention immediately as it is a strange organisation of words and also it gives of the image that the band is strange and may make the audience want to figure out why they are weird.
- In RockSound they use repetition of the word 'positive' as it relates back to the title of the article and also puts across the idea to the audience that with a positive mentality you can do anything
- Also the themes in the articles often relate to curent issues going on in the world at that period as this gives across the image that the band know what is going on in the world and it affects them to and that even famous people are affected by everyday things
- The Register in both magazines is rather informal, as it speaks of bizzarre things happening in there life and not real what you expect in a published magazine. This will have been because the audience for both magazines don't expect normal in the life of the bands in this magazines.
- Also the langage could be described as dark in both magazines as ClashMusic refers to 'Road Kill' this puts across an image that they notice the everyday things to and in RockSound there are references to 'Suicide' and 'Depression' this shows they address common themes in everyday life and know it happens and tells the people out there it could even happen to famous people.
- They have different methods of address in the magazines RockSound is much more serious with the use of swearing 'bullshit' as this much more common use of language amongst fans of that type of music and adds extra emphasis if they use such serious words. Whereas in ClashMusic they address the audience with a much more humorous manner and try to make the band seem much more laid back and relaxed as that is what the listeners if the band expect with that type of music
From what I learned about language and register in the magazine articles I read and analysed I learnt that when writing a magazine article you have to take in careful consideration of the type of language the Target audience use and therefore to use it, of you can in the article. Also you have to take it into account whether the TA would prefer a serious approach to articles or a more humorous approach. Also if you can you need to put into the article about modern issues and also include colloquialisms of the TA to make them feel more involved.
